Vaccines are an effective way to protect your pet against harmful diseases.
Having your pet vaccinated protects them from various illnesses that are sometimes transmissible to other pets and even humans. For this reason, we encourage our clients to work with one of our veterinarians to create a vaccination schedule. With this schedule we will decide what vaccines are necessary for your dog and create a timeline for when each shot should be administered. Core vaccines are deemed essential because of how easily diseases spread without them. Plus, these diseases can spread to humans. Puppies and dogs need to be vaccinated against:
We recommend non-core vaccines based on the likelihood of your pet being exposed to certain diseases. If your pet’s surroundings or lifestyle put them at risk we may recommend vaccinations against Bordetella, Lyme disease and Leptospirosis.
We usually begin puppy vaccinations at 8-weeks-old. This is generally when immunity from their mother’s milk wears off. From that age, we continue vaccines every 3-4 weeks until they are 4-months-old.
We recommend adult dogs get booster shots when they have completed their last round of puppy shots. Booster shots are administered either once every year or once every three years. Most vaccines are effective for one year with the exception of Rabies and Bordetella. Rabies shots are effective for three years and Bordetella 6-12 months.
